"Samples [A] and [B] were taken at the most extreme southern point of Guam that could be accessed easily by road, just east of Merizo, 2.8 km east from the Achang Small Boat Harbor, and immediately north of Achang Reef Flat. At this location, Highway 4 parallels the coast and passes within a few feet of the sea. The distance between the two samples along the beach/marsh is about 900 meters. Sample [A] 900 meters to the west of sample [B], toward Merizo, is granular and typical of what we think of as sand. Sample [B] is more silty . . . and was taken from a tidal pool (marsh) with lots of vegetation and detritus around the area. I believe this small area is prone to tidal flooding, and does not incur heavy wave action as would be evidenced by the siltiness of the sample and the protective offshore reef. " Gary Foster

Roundness is the degree of smoothing due to abrasion of sedimentary particles. It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere.

The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle.
