"The [road debris shown below] was collected off the surface of the boulevard . . . directly in front of the Frankie E. Smith Police Station after a heavy rainfall. The material came down the street from the escarpment above town. It's a conglomerate of asphalt pavement ingredients loosened by tires as the cars pass along the street, and by rain action. Other sand-type crystals cascaded down the street gutters . . . and are intermingled within the sample.I think perhaps this is an instructive lesson on how sand consolidates, and how, on a microcosmic level, it accumulates. You will see that overall the grains are larger. [T]he majority of the finer grains and silt were washed away by the rainwater gushing down the street. The larger grains settled out first, and were deposited and accumulated on the side of the street, while the finer grains succumed to the storm drain. The dark grains are the result of the asphalt adhering to the grains itself." Gary Foster

GRAIN SHAPE CHARACTERISTICS

(PREPARED BY GAMMA ZETA CHAPTER , SIGMA GAMMA EPSILON, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY - AGI CHART))

Roundness is the degree of smoothing due to abrasion of sedimentary particles. It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere.

The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle.
