"The sand came from beneath the famous PHOENIX sign located off Ellsworth Ave in the foothills. . . Letters are about 60 feet high, maybe a little less. The sign is not well maintained now. I heard once that periodically a team of students from some high school scale the side of the hill and re-paint the rocks. But being near the Rio Salado rifle range, I imagine this has been curtailed." Gary Foster |
