"I collected [the sample] . . on the beach after some rains. Lots of Mica gets flushed down to a seasonal stream, and washed up  onto the beaches. I collected it from the area just above the littoral zone that had a high concentration [of Mica]. It tends to break down pretty quick with wave action. Used to show the kids how you can estimate the age of the sand on the beach somewhat by color. And to show them what those little gold flakes are in the sand . . ." Steven Stuart

GRAIN SHAPE CHARACTERISTICS

(PREPARED BY GAMMA ZETA CHAPTER , SIGMA GAMMA EPSILON, KENT STATE UNIVERSITY - AGI CHART))

Roundness is the degree of smoothing due to abrasion of sedimentary particles. It is expressed as the ratio of the average radius of curvature of the edges or corners to the radius of curvature of the maximum inscribed sphere.

The sphericity of a particle is: the ratio of the surface area of a sphere (with the same volume as the given particle) to the surface area of the particle.
